Baker Wetlands, Lawrence, KS
Baker Wetlands is a managed nature preserve located on the south side of Lawrence, Kansas. The site covers over 900 acres and offers a diverse range of habitats. As many as 487 plant species have been identified within the wetlands. They serve as home to 98 vertebrate species and at least 278 bird species. Bird activity is particularly high during the spring and fall migratory seasons.
Baker Wetlands is only about 20 miles from our driveway and is also one of the more highly regarded locations in Kansas for birding, so we visit it regularly, particularly during migration. Some of the photos in this gallery were taken just beyond the wetlands on the south side of the Wakarusa River near the East Lawrence WWTP. Shallow flooded fields in this area are essentially adjacent to Baker Wetlands and attracts a wide variety of birds.
